Making a nice backyard with a pond
Making a nice backyard
Recently a client came to us from seeing a pond we had built for a Home and Garden Show. The couple said that they were looking to make a nice backyard. They wanted a pond with a stream bed and two waterfalls, large flagstone pavers and a fire pit.
Well my first thoughts were of a large yard with plenty of room for a stream and a good size pond. But when I visited their home, I was surprised by the size we had to work with. The dimension was no more than 28’ long and about 12’ wide. So this is what we came up with
On one side we built about a 4’ waterfall into a pond about 10’ x10’. We made the pond roughly 3’ deep for the Koi. The other side has a small waterfall with a stream that empties into the pond and is roughly 24-30” wide. One thing we did slightly different on this job, is that we put a separate motor to the stream in the pond, so that the stream could be turned off separately from the pond if they didn’t want to run it all the time. The key to a well operating stream is to make certain that there is plenty of water flow to prevent algae growth. This backyard pond really made a difference , but what really finished the job off was the installation of the flagstone pavers and the firepit we installed. When choosing a licensed contractor, it is nice to find one that can handle all the trades so that the job moves along at a nice steady pace.
