Pond Maintenance - What is the best type of filtration for your pond?

As a Pond builder in Los Angeles I am asked all the time-

What is the best type of filtration for your pond?

The first thing to take into consideration is how much work you want to put into the cleaning of your pond and what are your expectations? Do you want to clean the pond filter every couple of days, every couple of weeks or months? Do you want to take up space in the pond for filtration or have a unit outside the pond? Do you want to have a natural looking water garden or a pristine Koi pond that is crystal clear all of the time? But there is also a matter of budget.  Most of the ponds that we clean when performing pond maintenance are nothing more than filter pads that stop the accumulation of dirt, plant debris and leaves from staying in the pond or clogging up the pond pump. This type of filtration usually occurs in what we call “skimmers”, or “in-pond” filter boxes.  If there is a waterfall in the pond, some of the time there are also filter pads inside the basket of the waterfall as well. These pads you would just rinse with a water hose (or pond water and a bucket) and stick them back into the pond. This system is Ok, but to me it is just barely adequate at best for removing debris from a pond.  A more advanced type of filtration system that we see quite often when performing pond maintenance and especially on ponds of substantial size would be called “Sand Filters” or “Bio Media Filters”. These types of filter are always outside of the pond. They are considerably more expensive but do a better job of keeping the pond clean and require less hands on. What is also nice about this type of filtration is that as the fish get bigger and the plants get larger, this filtration system will do a better job. To clean this type of filter you would turn a handle on top of the unit and it flushes all the debris out of the filter. When I meet with a customer and we talk about what kind of pond they would like and how involved they want to be in caring for the pond, filtration is very important to the conversation. I as a pond contractor/builder make certain that every part of the pond design is discussed in full detail because missing any area of discussion will affect the success of the pond, koi pond or water garden.
